The Grand National (known as the John Smith’s Grand National for sponsorship reasons) is the most valuable National Hunt horse race in the world. It is possibly the biggest betting race in the world and is popular people who don’t generally bet on anything.

The Grand National is also one of the most controversial races of the year, due to the high profile given to injuries and fatalities suffered by the participating horses. The event has been targeted by animal rights groups who have campaigned to have it banned. Sadly one rider has also died as a result of injuries sustained in the race.
